Between forest and horizon, architecture rooted in Abitibi.
Inspired by the landscapes of Abitibi, the Rouyn-Noranda Aquatic Complex translates two defining features of the region into architecture : the repeated verticality of the black spruce and the expansive horizontality of its lakes. Timber, rhythm, and transparency shape a public facility deeply rooted in its setting, where natural light and views to the outdoors accompany the experience of the pools.
Located at the heart of the educational district, on the Cégep de l’Abitibi-Témiscamingue campus and near UQAT, the complex forms part of the development of the mining innovation zone. Compact and organized on a single level, the building includes a six-lane, 25-metre competition pool, a recreational pool of nearly 150 m², a universal changing room, a multipurpose room, and the administrative and technical spaces required for its operation. Viewing areas directly accessible from the lobby allow visitors to observe activities in both pools. Along the south façade, a covered walkway guides users from boulevard de l’Université and the parking area to the entrance, while protecting the pools from direct solar exposure and glare on the water.
The architectural expression draws directly from the regional landscape. The slender, repetitive silhouette of the black spruce inspires an envelope composed of vertical elements layered in both regular and irregular rhythms, while the large glazed surfaces at pool level evoke the horizon line of the lakes that characterize the territory. Inside, a mass timber structure defines the identity of the complex : 25-metre-span beams topped with CLT panels free the pool areas from interior supports and give the roof a strong architectural presence. Natural light and views to the outdoors reinforce this connection to the landscape within spaces designed to be accessible, bright, and comfortable for all.
