A sculptural roof designed for year-round recreation.

Serving as the vibrant heart of Parc des Saphirs, the Domaine du Boisé Outdoor Rink provides a protected, accessible sports facility designed for year-round use. Through its expressive architecture and strong presence within the landscape, the project becomes not only a place for recreation but also an urban landmark and a showcase for Québec's expertise in timber construction.

The architectural concept is defined by a large hybrid timber-and-steel roof spanning 28 metres without intermediate supports. This innovative structure combines glued laminated timber with a steel tensioning system to achieve a remarkably light and slender silhouette despite the scale of the facility. Variable-depth timber trusses, inclined columns, and carefully concealed connections transform the structure into the project's defining architectural feature. Beneath the expansive canopy, the playing surface functions as an outdoor skating rink in winter and is converted into a dek hockey or basketball court during the warmer months. A discreet service building, framed in light wood construction and clad inspruce, is integrated beneath the roof and marks the entrance to the site.

Located at the edge of a wooded area and aligned with rue des Saphirs, the rink integrates seamlessly into both its natural and urban surroundings. Its orientation, protection from prevailing winds, and visual openness toward the street enhance user comfort while encouraging year-round community use. Recipient of numerous architectural awards, the project demonstrates how a recreational facility can successfully combine structural innovation, material restraint, and high-quality public space, becoming an iconic gathering place for the Boischatel community.
