Oulton-Stanish Centre

The project is organized around an NHL-sized ice rink with seating for more than 900 spectators. A removable ice surface allows the arena to be quickly converted for conferences, graduation ceremonies, training sessions, and special events. The facility also includes varsity and community locker rooms, a physiotherapy clinic, food service areas, a multipurpose room, and a spacious lobby overlooking the ice. Despite the constraints of a compact urban site, the layout maximizes every square metre while creating clear and intuitive circulation. The building opens generously onto the campus through a direct connection to the LeMarchant Building atrium and a dynamic public entrance that showcases the activity within.

The architecture draws inspiration from Halifax's landscape and maritime identity. A brick podium evokes the region's rocky shoreline, while the lighter upper volume recalls the mist that frequently blankets the city. The fluid lines of the façade reflect the movement of the sea, expressing the energy and activity housed within. Inside, an open concourse wraps around the seating bowl, maintaining continuous visual connections with the campus and neighbouring athletic facilities, while the main lobby frames expansive views of the adjacent residential neighbourhood. The Oulton-Stanish Centre stands as a new university landmark where sport, student life, and community come together in a bright, accessible, and welcoming environment.
