Respectfully extending a modern school heritage.
The expansion of Saint-Louis-de-France Elementary School continues the story of a landmark of Québec's modern school architecture while responding to the evolving needs of its educational community. The project balances heritage preservation, high-quality learning environments, and a strong connection to the surrounding neighbourhood through a restrained and contemporary architectural approach.
The addition introduces eight new classrooms, flexible learning spaces, and a new athletic facility, while reorganizing existing areas to improve functionality throughout the school. Positioned as a natural extension of the original 1969 building,the addition responds to the site's changing topography and respects the architectural qualities of the school designed by Pierre Rinfret. The composition echoes the rhythm of the original ribbon windows, the balance of horizontal and vertical lines, and the dialogue between glazed brick and aluminum, ensuring a seamless relationship between the existing building and the new intervention.
The project also places a strong emphasis on occupant comfort and well-being. Natural daylight, effective ventilation, and the quality of the learning environment guided every architectural decision, both within the new addition and the renovated portions of the existing school. Faithful to the spirit of the original building while meeting contemporary educational standards, the project creates a sustainable, bright, and welcoming environment that supports the school's continued evolution and strengthens its role within the community.
