A contemporary dialogue with heritage.
The Fasken Building continues the transformation of 300 rue Saint-Paul through the addition of a contemporary wing along rue Abraham-Martin. Built on the former loading docks and shipping area of the historic postal sorting centre, the project reclaims an underused site while reinforcing the presence of the complex within the urban landscape of the Vieux-Port.
The new addition is composed of a solid mineral base punctuated by carefully placed openings, extending the architectural language of the existing building's podium. Above, a generously glazed volume appears to float lightly over the base, creating an open façade facing the adjacent park and a striking cantilever. The building's triangular geometry, shaped by the unique constraints of the site, frames new views toward the Gare du Palais and Bassin Louise while maximizing daylight and panoramic views from the office spaces.
The material palette establishes a respectful dialogue with the surrounding heritage context. Limestone salvaged during demolition was reused to construct the podium, while the regular rhythm of the fenestration echoes the proportions of the original façades. The restrained, crystalline glass envelope clearly expresses the contemporary nature of the intervention without disrupting its historic setting. Through its scale, composition, and carefully crafted materiality, the Fasken Building integrates naturally into the existing urban fabric while asserting a distinctly contemporary architectural identity.
