A laboratory where research comes to life.
The Institute of Nutrition and Functional Foods (INAF) at Université Laval brings together state-of-the-art research facilities within an environment designed to foster innovation, collaboration, and researcher well-being. The project transforms an existing building by integrating highly specialized laboratories while celebrating its distinctive architectural character.
The project includes the creation of an experimental food laboratory dedicated to the study of eating behaviours, the renovation of the metabolic kitchen, specimen collection areas, research laboratories, office spaces, and the phytology research sector. A former livestock observation arena, distinguished by its remarkable concrete dome, now houses the new experimental kitchen. The addition of an intermediate floor accommodates this complex program while preserving the architectural integrity of the space and enhancing the generous natural daylight that defines the volume. The organization of the facilities is based on a careful analysis of circulation, ergonomics, and research workflows to optimize the day-to-day operation of the research teams.
Delivering the project required particularly rigorous technical coordination within an occupied building housing specialized laboratories and containment areas. A BIM model developed from point cloud surveys made it possible to anticipate conflicts and integrate new building systems precisely within the existing structure. Particular attention was also given to acoustic comfort, especially beneath the concrete dome, where acoustic simulations guided the discreet integration of sound-absorbing treatments. The project demonstrates how a contemporary intervention can successfully transform an existing building into a high-performance, flexible, and inspiring research environment.
