An industrial monolith reimagined for the city.
Formerly Canada Post's central mail sorting facility, Place TELUS transformed the landmark building at 300 rue Saint-Paul into a contemporary office destination in the revitalized Vieux-Port district of Québec City. The project breathes new life into this imposing 1960s functionalist structure by prioritizing natural light, openness, and high-quality work environments while preserving its powerful architectural character.
The redevelopment was undertaken to accommodate TELUS offices alongside a mix of commercial and public uses. Existing industrial spaces were converted into bright, flexible workplaces through the enlargement of façade openings, allowing natural daylight to penetrate deep into the building. New shops and restaurants activate the ground floor, strengthening the relationship between the building and the surrounding neighbourhood. The project also incorporates sustainable design strategies, universal accessibility, and comprehensive code upgrades, significantly improving the experience for occupants and visitors alike.
The architecture celebrates the strength and restraint of the original building while establishing a distinctly contemporary identity. A series of granite colonnades rhythmically frames expansive glazed façades, maximizing views and daylight throughout the office floors. A substantial stone volume on the eastern side consolidates the vertical circulation, freeing the office plates to remain open and flexible. Respectfully executed within the framework of the original architecture, the project successfully combines adaptive reuse, environmental performance, and urban regeneration. Recipient of both an OAQ Excellence Award and a City of Québec Architecture Award for adaptive reuse, Place TELUS remains a benchmark for sustainable architectural transformation.
