A performing arts venue reimagined as a cultural landmark.
The renovation and expansion of the Albert-Rousseau Performing Arts Centre transformed its envelope and public spaces to strengthen the visibility of this iconic cultural institution at Cégep de Sainte-Foy. Combining performance, identity, and user experience, the project introduces a contemporary architectural expression that establishes the venue as a prominent landmark within Québec City's urban landscape.
The intervention included the complete reconstruction of the façades, the expansion of the upper level, and the reconfiguration of the entrance foyers and public gathering areas. Generous glazing opens the building to the city, while a perforated aluminum screen—its pattern inspired by the venue's name translated into Morse code - filters natural daylight, controls solar gain, and animates the façades through a dynamic play of light and shadow. The integration of a digital display and scenographic elements further reinforces the identity of the main entrance while providing a contemporary platform for showcasing the venue's cultural programming.
Inside, the foyers and corporate reception lounges were entirely redesigned to create bright, flexible, and welcoming spaces suited to performances, college activities, and corporate events alike. The renovation also significantly improved the building envelope's environmental performance through the use of durable, locally sourced, and recycled materials. By clearly expressing the building's functions through a refined architectural composition and an expressive contemporary identity, the project renews the image of the Albert-Rousseau Performing Arts Centre, affirming its role as a vibrant cultural destination open to the community.
